It is with great sadness that we announce the promotion to glory of former Territorial Music Secretary and New York Staff Bandmaster, Vernon Post. Post was a leading figure in the development of Salvation Army (SA) music within the USA East and at Star Lake Musicamp. He first attended Star Lake in 1940, at the age of 13. That year he won the coveted Cornet pin. He returned to Star Lake in 1941, working all summer at the youth camps and serving as camp bugler. He served in World War II as a musician in the U.S. Navy, studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music where he received a Bachelor of Music degree and led a variety of SA bands in the region. In 1950, he moved to Pittsburgh where he took on the position of Divisional Music Director, as well as bandmaster of the Pittsburgh Temple Band. In 1955, Staff Bandmaster Richard Holz appointed Post as NYSB Male Chorus director, and that group achieved great fame under his direction, so much so that Holz expanded the ensemble’s name to New York Staff Band and Male Chorus. Post made significant contributions at Star Lake Musicamp and served as Territorial Music Secretary and New York Staff Bandmaster from 1963 to 1972. He would go on to pursue a successful career as a music educator in Summit, New Jersey, and returned to Star Lake Musicamp as guest conductor in 1980. He was an active member of the Montclair Citadel Corps, perennial supporter of Star Lake and inductee of the Star Lake Musicamp Hall of Fame. He left behind a legacy of exceptional musicianship, spirituality, and leadership that will be remembered and honored by all who knew him.
