At the beginning of every new season with the New York Staff Band, we have the privilege of welcoming new members to the ministry of the band. Although it happens every September, it seems more dramatic this year because someone other than Bandmaster Ronald Waiksnoris will be welcoming these new members into the band. After a marvelous 24 years as Bandmaster and over 40 years in the band, Bandmaster Ronald Waiksnoris has retired as of August, 2016.
Derek Lance was recently appointed Bandmaster of the New York Staff Band and has taken up the baton after playing in the solo cornet section for the last 14 years. We congratulate Derek on this new position and look forward to exciting times under his leadership.
In addition to the departure of Bandmaster Waiksnoris, the band has had to say farewell to Gordon Ward (Principal Cornet), Lindsay Evans (2nd Trombone), Major A. Philip Ferreira (2nd Baritone), Dean Farrar (1st Baritone) and Douglas Berry (Solo Cornet). In total this group of players has given over 100 years of service to the band. They will not be easily replaced. We thank them for their service and meaningful contributions to the band: its music and its ministry.
We are pleased to introduce 8 new players to the band. Joining the band this year are Brindley Venables (Principal Cornet), Daniel Wajda (Solo Cornet), Devonte Thompson (1st Baritone), Brandon Finnie (2nd Baritone) and Michael DeVault (Eb Tuba). After playing a portion of last season with the band, we are pleased that Matthew Hodgson (1st Horn) and Emmanuel Zabala (2nd Horn) are now official members. In addition to these new members, we are pleased that Michael Baker (Solo Cornet) has rejoined the band. Please be in prayer for the new members as they begin this fabulous ministry journey with the New York Staff Band.
