NYSB Recording Report – The Invitation – Worship with the NYSB

On Friday and Saturday, February 16th and 17th, the men and women of the NYSB gathered at the College for Officer Training in Suffern, NY to record its newest album.

The concept of this album is a new and interesting one, basically outlining a typical Sunday morning worship meeting through music. Each element such as the scripture reading, sermon, offertory etc. has a purposefully selected piece that best describes the essence of each integral moment in worship.

Old hymns of the church are featured in addition to fairly new contemporary worship songs from composers that are well known in SA music to some newer names. A brand-new piece from Martin Cordner was only received the week before the recording in its entirety but the band quickly made up for lost time and got the music under their belts!

Phil Bulla, famous for his work with Billy Joel, is no stranger to salvation army banding and was once again on board to bring his decades of expertise to the recording room. In addition, a good friend of the band and well-respected musician and former principal trombone, Matt Luhn, was on hand to find each detail in the music and the band certainly felt comfortable knowing he was listening in.

There was a great deal of excellent playing throughout the band but some special mentions certainly go to Jonathan George who secured his place in the soprano seat after laying down several solid last note performances! The basses and euphs also had their work cut out recording the very special ‘Corpus Christi’ middle section!

The title of the album is The Invitation – Worship with the NYSB and features a new arrangement (of the same name) by newly appointed Senior Music Producer and composer, Gavin Whitehouse. It is the band’s hope that this album will inspire people in worship but also serve as an ‘invitation’ to know the Lord and be blessed by Him and the music provided in this new recording project.
