REVIEW

The New York Staff Band has visited the United Kingdom on ten separate occasions within a century, 1904-2003. No North American brass band can rival that achievement. Acclaimed visits in the past include the 1904 International Congress; 1914 International Congress; 1960 Tour of England and Scotland, British Congress, and UK Bandmasters’ Councils; 1968 UK Bandmasters’ Councils; 1978 International Congress; 1985 Tour of England; 1992 Tour of England, Scotland, and Wales; 1999 Northern Ireland; 2001 Hendon Highlights concert. This recording celebrates their spring 2003 Tour of England and Scotland, as well as their guest appearance at the annual Gospel Arts Concert in the Royal Albert Hall.

Entitled United, this program is symbolic of the longstanding fellowship shared between Salvationists of the UK and the NYSB. The NYSB has reciprocated, hosting many musical sections of the UK when they toured within the States. The bonds go beyond tours; since 1887 a large majority of the NYSB have claimed British ancestry and a good portion of its former leaders were British born, including such notables as William Broughton, Derek Smith, and Brian Bowen. More importantly, the NYSB and their Salvationist friends in the UK are united in their calling to proclaim through music the Christian Gospel. The program chosen here amply demonstrates that mission. From initial 1904 performance in such venues as the Crystal Palace and on the Thames Embankment, NYSB festivals in the UK have always been marked by innovative programming and new music. In keeping faith with that tradition the majority of the items recorded here are new, written especially for the 2003 tour.
